BALI SURFERS GATHERING AT DRIFTER SURF SHOP

Image
There was something special in the air during the Bali Surfers Gathering at Drifter Surf Shop, Uluwatu. The place was filled with stories, laughter and generations of surfers who helped shape what Bali’s surf culture has become today. We felt so much gratitude for being able to host an evening dedicated to the people who paved the way long before surfing in Bali became what it is now. Legends and pioneers like Ketut Menda, Wayan Gantiyasa, Mangku Weta, Wayan Sudirka, Nyoman Radiasa and Wayan Sujana joined us for a night of connection, storytelling, and reflection on the history of surfing in Bali. These are the people whose passion, courage, and love for the ocean helped create the foundations for the generations that followed. One of the most meaningful parts of the evening was seeing younger surfers sitting alongside elders, listening closely to stories from the early days. Tales of simple beginnings and the journeys that these legends have gone through over the decades. Respect ...

THE NEXT GENERATION SURF HELMET

Image
Eighteen-year-old founder Daan van Rooijen set out to change safety standards in surfing forever. The result is Mamuli-Surf, a next-generation surf helmet engineered specifically for the water, without sacrificing comfort, performance or style. The story behind the brand is personal. On July 10, 2024, Daan’s sister Guusje was hit by another surfer at their home break in Bali. She suffered life-threatening skull and brain damage. It changed everything. “I realized that in snowboarding, skating, biking and every other extreme sport, wearing helmets is the norm — but in surfing it isn’t. I set out to create a helmet surfers actually want to wear: one that feels comfortable, performs, and looks good in the water.” Sixteen months later, that idea became reality. Mamuli-Surf launched on Kickstarter on April 7, 2026, with a goal of funding 300 helmets for mold production — and hit that goal. The Mamuli-Surf helmet is confirmed for market launch in early 2027. Key Features: The helme...

ARTIST OF THE MONTH: DULLY JABRIK

Image
In a brand-new column for Surftime, each issue we will now be featuring the surf artists of our community. This issue we are featuring the art of Dully Jabrik. His simple, folk-art style and Naivety belies its complicated context and the skill that it takes to produce such visions. Here we see three of his works that reflect the passion that only a surf artist could retain. A green barrel that looks back at us, eliciting that feeling we get when paddling out over riderless waves while staring into the vortex. A visual love poem to the complex emotions that overcome us all in the surf and simple figure riding above and beyond with the sun on his back and the darkness of night chasing him down. One last wave before the stars appears. It is this kind of expression, this kind of art that helps us all regard the cosmic forces of our sport beyond photographs and into the realm of pure imagination. RIP CURL CANGGU STORE

Image
Rip Curl has celebrated it’s Canggu Store soft opening by hosting a Girls Go Surfing Day with Taina Angel Izquierdo on March 27th bringing at least 40 girls together in Batu Bolong Beach to surf, support each other and have fun for the day. The design of the store brings back modern industrial design of exposed steel structures and the use of recycled teakwood and ulin to bring some of that rustic feel into the store. The idea was then to take that language and combine it with something more contemporary, which reflect the vibrant character of Canggu. 1ST floor carries full range of Men, Women and Kids apparel and a section to introduce Rip Curl surfboards. 2nd floor is the Surfboards area, with DHD, FIREWIRE and PYZEL as the pillars, a hardware section and a complete collection of Wetsuits for both Men and Women. The major positives about giving more volume with that extra height is to give a sense of breather, given the context of the surrounding that is packed and visua...
